Games for a Cause

What's New
Every once in a while I stumble across something new. I found this game company, and was intrigued by their games, and especially their purpose. My mother, who I dedicate my store to, developed Alzheimer's. I know how important research can be. These games look like fun. Welcome to Gray Matters Games - a family owned business that designs and publishes lively games for people with active minds! The company all started on a family road trip through the Arizona desert when Joe entertained a car full of passengers with a game that became the concept for You Bet-Cha!Founders Joe and Lauren Barron believe that business should be a force for good and wanted to connect the company's devotion to supporting brain health. Because of this, Gray Matters Games donates…

Dave Cubiak tackles a new mystery.

What's New
I was honored to meet Patricia Skalka when her first book, Death Stalks Door County was published. Reading her books has been a pleasure, a welcome escape, and something I look forward to when I finish the one before. Her mysteries are a fast and easy read. They touch upon the life in a small community without being 'touristy', if that is a word. Death Washes Ashore goes on sale April 20th. Preorders being accepted now. In the wake of a brutal storm that lashed the Door County peninsula, Sheriff Dave Cubiak assesses the damage: broken windows, downed trees, and piles of mysterious debris along the shoreline. He leaves the comfort of his home and heads out into the aftermath, checking in with folks along the way to offer help.…

Living in the time of Covid

What's New
2020 has been a year for the history books, and it isn't over yet. There is not a time you turn on the news or open your internet and not hear of fires raging, hurricanes threatening, election turmoil, and of course, Covid-19. We are not exempt from the effects of this virus sweeping through the county and the nation. Suppliers have been slow at getting product out, distribution centers have been closed, even our comics stopped shipping for several months. Being closed from March 17 - May 26th was quite a blow to our little store. The late winter/early spring is a slow time any year, but this shut down impacted the beginning of tourist season for us. If it hadn't been for the sale of some personal items and…

Thoughts on Independent Bookstore Day

What's New
In the age of cookie cutter big box sellers and impersonal online stores, shopping malls and main streets have a very different feel than they did when I was younger. I remember pressing my nose against the windows of the toy stores, dreaming of my magical day gaping at the white wedding gowns and veils, and books, always books. I religiously took my allowance down to the corner bookstore and spent hours deciding on just that right book for the week. Trixie Beldon, The Secret Garden, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Are You There God? It's Me Margaret, and so many more. As I grew older my tastes in books grew. I learned about more fantasy authors, and thrillers. I read Poe and Shakespeare, Tolkien, McCaffery, Stephen King.…

New Comic Arrival Info

What's New
As with everything now, things change on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. As many of the die hard comic fans have heard, DC has gone away from Diamond distributors and now is with a new company. What does that mean? Well, for the dealers it is a headache! For the fans, it is a headache. Fortunately, these headaches will go away soon. Here at the store, we have established our account with the new company and have placed our first DC comics order with them. DC is working on making sure missed issues are available for reorder so the middle of a storyline is not missing. As far as other comics, due to the Covid-19, shipments have been experiencing delays. Right now I am saying comics will be arriving…

What's New
Anyone who likes history and memorable characters will like this book. The Paris Hours Told over the course of a single day in 1927, The Paris Hours takes four ordinary people whose stories, told together, are as extraordinary as the glorious city they inhabit. Both books are available in the shop. If sold out, call and I will add to the next order. You can also email me at otherworlds18@gmail.com or call 920-600-1692 Reading this book made me think back to books about the Pestigo fire in 1871. Fire in Paradise: An American Tragedy There is no precedent in postwar American history for the destruction of the town of Paradise, California. On November 8, 2018, the community of 27,000 people was swallowed by the ferocious Camp Fire, which razed virtually every home…

WHY READING?

What's New
“THE ONLY THING THAT KEPT ME GOING WAS STORIES. STORIES ARE HOPE. THEY TAKE YOU OUT OF YOURSELF FOR A BIT, AND WHEN YOU GET DROPPED BACK IN, YOU’RE DIFFERENT- YOU’RE STRONGER, YOU’VE SEEN MORE, YOU’VE FELT MORE. STORIES ARE LIKE SPIRITUAL CURRENCY.” ---Neil Gaiman The Sandman: Book of Dreams “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss “The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest (people) of the past centuries.” – Descartes “I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a…
